Musicians Perform for Guild Scholarships

Seven high school seniors will compete for Westmont music scholarships at the sixth annual Music Guild Competition on Saturday, March 3, at 7 p.m. at Westmont’s Deane Chapel on lower campus. The event is free and open to the public.
The winner of the Guild Scholarship, who will be announced immediately following the event, will receive up to $10,000 in annual music scholarships funds (up to $40,000 over four years) to study at Westmont.
This year’s finalists are violist Sarah Chan, a homeschooled senior from Loma Linda; pianist Hannah Duff, senior at Dublin Coffman High School in Dublin, Ohio; violinist Bryan Kaleta, a senior at Canyon Crest Academy in San Diego; violinist Hana Kodaka, a senior at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in Rancho Palos Verdes; violinist Michael Kong, a high school senior at the Dr. TJ Owens Gilroy Early College Academy; Isaac Siebelink, a violist from Corona who studies at the Colburn School in downtown Los Angeles; and oboist Anna Terveen, a senior at Clackamas High School in Clackamas, Oregon.
The judges for this competition include Grey Brothers, professor of music, Steve Butler, professor of music, Steve Hodson, professor of music, Han Soo Kim, assistant professor of music, and Michael Shasberger, Adams professor of music and worship. The Guild Scholarship program is funded by The Guild for Music at Westmont. Prior guild winners include William Ellzey (cello, 2016), Jonathan Wong (violin, 2015), Tim Beccue (cello, 2014) and Lalia Mangione (violin, 2013).
The competition includes Siebelink performing works by Bach and Schubert; Terveen performing Emile Paladilhe and Ralph Vaughan Williams; Kong performing Èdouard Lalo; Chan performing Bach and Béla Bartók; Kodaka performing Max Bruch and Bach; Duff performing Brahms and Bach; and Kaleta performing Bach and Saint-Saëns. While the jury deliberates, the Debussy Quartet, featuring Westmont students Erik Fauss, Sierra Farrar, Mirah Ray and Beccue, will perform.
