Emmaus Road Reaches Out Globally

Across the globe, 37 Westmont students are spending their summer experiencing and engaging with contemporary challenges and opportunities as part of the Emmaus Road program. Five separate student-led teams are serving in Spain, Uganda, Thailand and Malaysia, Southeast Asia and Peru. Participants met regularly throughout the spring semester to prepare for the trips. Emmaus Road continues the Westmont tradition of sending students overseas for service and learning.

“Emmaus Road seeks to expand perspectives, encourage involvement, and awaken passions within the Westmont community towards Christ-centered global outreach, fellowship, and learning,” says Rebecca Boa, assistant director of campus life for ministry and outreach.

The Spain team will focus on art and culture, working at a gallery in Altea-Alicante and focusing on cultural immersion and fellowship with the community.

Students in Uganda will assist in community development and evangelism. They will teach children and minister in area churches.

The team in Thailand and Malaysia will have a dual focus of educating children and learning about human trafficking. will work to prevent human trafficking through education. Participants will instruct children in conversational English, music, science, Bible and other topics.

The Southeast Asia team will live with Muslim host families to learn about regional and religious customs. This trip partners with a company that uses a business as mission model in order to engage with locals.

The final group will assist World Vision in Peru. From their base at CEMAA seminary, the students will visit both metropolitan and rural parts of the nation.
