Manager's Toolkit Posting & Advertising
Human Resources provides counsel about how the position and the college are publicly described. Unless otherwise noted all regular staff positions are listed on the Westmont website on the Employment page, are posted and announced internally, included in a local church mailing and advertised in the Santa Barbara News Press. HR’s role in developing the pool is to ensure that above takes place. As a hiring manager, you should be looking for alternate ways to increase your pool of candidates.
Typically this involves one or more of the following strategies:
Internal Posting
The college’s policy is that open jobs will be posted on our job board (located outside of the HR Offices in Kerrwood Hall) for the benefit of Westmont employees for at least 10 days prior to making a job offer.
In an organization as small as Westmont there can be limited career advancement opportunity for employees. Our posting policy offers an opportunity to our employees to consider career moves within the college, and provides a discipline to consider career opportunities for our own employees before hiring from outside the college. There can be exceptions to this rule, where the ideal candidate is already working in the department with the opening, for example, if there is a promotional opportunity. Exceptions must approved by the President.
Newspaper/Trade Publication Advertising
Human Resources will work with the department to decide on the best venues to place advertisements. Human Resources will develop ads and covers costs for the local recruitment advertising which it places. The costs for advertising in regional or national publications are paid by the hiring department.
Church Mailings
Due to the special qualifications we seek regarding Christian faith, job openings are announced through an email list of local churches maintained by Human Resources.
Special Mailings
Based on the nature of the job, and in consultation with the hiring manager, job announcements may be sent to specific institutions, organizations, associations and our alumni. Production of special mailings and posting on professional listservs and associated costs are the responsibility of the hiring department.
